Gilbert Nguyen is a visual artist working at the intersection of anti-fashion and fine art.
Born in Austria - to Vietnamese parents - Gilbert Nguyen was raised on ARTE documentaries, MTV music clips, Japanese Manga and Vietnamese food.
„Growing up in a small, narrow-minded town in Austria, I have always been a maverick by nature. Provocation always seemed natural to me.“
Despite respecting the fashion industry and traditions, to him it’s “more fun to always speak out, since protesting is important in society. Like, when in the 70s bra-burning feminists didn't want to be dictated by male designers. I'd do that too“.
According to him, his photographies are like a feverish dream, which reflect a critique on political topics. „It can be chaotic, it can be unsettling - as long as if it’s creative or aesthetic, everything is okay“.
Currently Gilbert Nguyen is based in Vienna, Austria and is open for inquiries and artistic collaborations.
